Why I'm interested in Women's Studies

I am interested in Women’s Studies because women and their contributions to society have largely been overlooked and underappreciated. Through women’s studies, a new perspective of society is not only gained, but also seen as important and essential. The current social structure has been shaped through an overwhelmingly male dominated perspective which is usually seen as just being the way things are and have always been. Throughout middle school and high school, one is not really taught to challenge this biased construction of society and I feel that Women’s Studies is one of the main ways that individuals learn to view society from a different perspective and to fully comprehend how pervasive the oppression of women has been in our society.

I think that I, along with others, can benefit from studying living women sociologists because through studying living women sociologists our insights and perspectives on the field of sociology will be expanded. By studying these women, we will be able to see the contributions these women have made to the field of sociology, as well as how their gender has played a role in the work that they do. Studying these women sociologists will allow us to not only recognize these women as important scholars, but it may also help us to better understand how the personal really is political.
